3 tips for athletes to get through the COVID-19 crisis

There is a world before COVID-19, and a world during-and-after COVID-19. Everything has changed. We have to change, to adapt. Lucky for us, we are used to that. COVID-19 offers us a chance to do what we never had the time for.

1. Keeping fit @ home

As an athlete, you’re constantly working on optimizing your engine – your body. Not everything gets done in the gym, on the slopes or in a field. You train at home too. If you haven’t already, you can inspire your followers on social media with sports-specific workout routines. Imagine if all your fans get to work, now, at home, and come out ready to rock. Or at least without a binge-watch condition.

2. Interact with your fanbase

In normal times, it’s pretty difficult to give your fans attention, even though they’re incredibly important to you and your livelihood. Now is the time to get in touch with them. Host your own “Ask Me Anything” (AMA) sessions. Give private fitness lessons through Skype. Like, reshare and comment on posts that are about you or your sport. Right now, 90% of media coverage is given to COVID-19. That’s an incredible amount of over-saturation, and it’s also something that seeps into social media. Media is actively looking to balance out the negative with the positive, and social-media communities are following along those lines too.

3. Strategize

Your day-to-day and week-to-week are tough. You get caught up in training camps, sponsorship meetings, speaking engagement or competition – and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. With the exception of competition and training camps, you’re usually more reactive than active. Now is the time to sit back and create a strategy for yourself. It’s time to map a few things out, starting with:

  • Why you do what you do. Clarifying this will make it easier to communicate about who you are to the world.
  • What is it that you want to achieve, beyond winning or being the best? 
  • Which brands would be your ideal sponsors?
  • Which brands would be your realistic sponsors? Make sure there are no competitors in the same segments among them – e.g. don’t pick two shoe brands. 
  • What would you pitch about yourself to them? What could you do for that brand so they would want to invest in you?
  • What is your two-year plan? Or, if you’re nearing the end of your career in sports, what will your end-game and post-sports life look like? 

These are just three suggestions to get something going while we can’t focus on doing what we love most – at least not directly. It’s tough, but when we help each other and share positive content, we can enjoy this time as well and come back even stronger.
